The latest innovation in Dento-Facial imaging is called Cone Beam Scanning.

This equipment represents a much needed diagnostic imaging modality for Dental and Maxillo-facial Patients. Cone Beam or ‘Volumetric Imaging’ is in wide use worldwide and was developed specifically for Dental and Dento-Facial application.

This modality represents a new era in diagnostic imaging and is of invaluable benefit to our patients to assist with their diagnosis and management.

The benefit of Volumetric Computed Tomography when compared to conventional helical Computed Tomography is among others:

  • A great improvement in image quality with high definition scans allowing for the visualization of structures not easily visualized in conventional helical c/t scanners.
  • A significant radiation dose reduction to the patient which can be in the region of 95% lower than when these patients have a conventional C/T scan.
  • Decreased interference from scatter artifact which is of particular significance in the oral region as a result of metal restorations present in the oral cavity. This is a great break-through which now allows us to visualize pathology and bone structure that was previously obliterated by the scatter.
  • Patients are scanned in a seated position, this allows for a more comfortable experience with less feeling of claustrophobia. Fluid levels in the sinus cavities are also better seen in this vertical position.

I firmly believe that we can now offer our patients more accurate diagnosis and treatment based on significantly more accurate imaging technology.
